GYC Visit – RNLI’s Tower Lifeboat Station
March 28 @ 14:00 - 15:30
Free
Greenwich Yacht Club is one of a small number of organisations invited to visit Tower Lifeboat Station on the 28th March. This is a dress rehearsal before the station is opened to
the general public later this year.
Who can attend?
Although other fundraising for the RNLI takes place at GYC, this invitation is specifically in recognition of GYC’s annual fundraising yacht race for the benefit of the Tower Lifeboat Station. There are 20 places available. Competitors in the 2025 race, and volunteers who helped the event run smoothly, are invited to sign up to secure their place by Saturday March 7. After this date, remaining places will be made available to all GYC members.
Where is Tower Lifeboat Station?
Confusingly nowhere near the Tower of London, for which it was named! It is on the north embankment of the Thames to the east of Waterloo Bridge. The address is Tower Lifeboat Station, Victoria Embankment, Westminster, London WC2R 2PP. The nearest tube stations are Embankment and Temple.
What’s the Itinerary?
The visit will include an illustrated talk about the RNLI in general and Tower Lifeboat Station in particular, followed by a tour of the station conducted by crew/former crew members, concluding with “Q and A” session. The presentation includes recordings of real life incidents, and viewer discretion is advised. There is no charge for this visit, however donations to the RNLI would be much appreciated.
Where does visit start?
Attendees are requested to meet at the top of the downstream/most easterly access ramp to Tower Lifeboat Station at 2pm on Saturday 28 th March. Please do not be late, and plan to arrive earlier than 2pm. The visit will last up to 90 minutes, though may finish sooner.
What else you need to know?
Unfortunately, there is no disabled access to the station and the visit is not suitable for anyone with impaired mobility. Visitors are required to wear flat shoes.
