SUMMARY:GYC Social - Beach Clean2
DESCRIPTION:Our last beach clean on 18th April was very successful with 22 bags of rubbish and 15 bags of recycling.  Let’s see if we can beat that record and keep our beach clean for our community / wildlife!   Therefore\, I have organised another beach clean with permission from PLA\, Environmental Agency\, Thames21 and Greenwich Council. \nThis is a free event for our members to give back to the community and help our wildlife thrive; but we do need you to book a slot so we know that we have enough litter pickers and know how many volunteers to expect \nImportant notes \n\nWear closed toe shoes/boots (with metal ideal\, but not mandatory).\nWear gloves (you will not be handling any litter).\nWear long comfortable trousers.\nWear long sleeved tops.\nAny cuts and open wounds must be dressed and covered before attending (mandatory)\nOptional – facemasks and goggles\n\nWe will provide bags\, litter pickers (limited) and guidance. \nI will be managing this event with the help of Dee Smith who is also the Area Coordinator for British Divers Marine Life Rescue and is a Marine Mammal Medic. \nAny questions please do get in touch – social@greenwichyachtclub.co.uk \n  \n

SUMMARY:GYC Workshop – Whipping\, Splicing and Chains!
DESCRIPTION:This event is for members & applying members only. Roger is running a workshop on a Tuesday night to learning “Whipping” and “Splicing” (we may not get to the chains!) every other month starting from 17th February. Bring your own fid!\nWhipping and splicing are traditional ways to repair and care for your rope. They’re especially useful\, as replacing rope new for old is wasteful and can be expensive. \nThe technique of whipping is hundreds of years old\, but it remains the best and safest way to secure the end of a rope. It’s generally regarded to be much better than melting the end\, which can create sharp or bulging ends \nRope splicing is the forming of a semi-permanent joint between two or two parts of the same rope by partly untwisting and then interweaving their strands. Splices can be used to form a stopper at the end of a line\, to form a loop or an eye in a rope\, or for joining two ropes together. Splices are preferred to knotted rope\, since while a knot typically reduces the strength by 20–40%\, a splice is capable of attaining a rope’s full strength. \nAny Questions talk to Roger\, see you all there!\n

SUMMARY:GYC Social – “Solstice Boat Building”
DESCRIPTION:Every year to celebrate the winter solstice there is a small boat building event\, FREE for all\nour members and their families at Greenwich Yacht Club. \n• Start time for boat building at the clubhouse is 2pm till 4pm\, you can arrive anytime\nonwards.\n• Prizes will be awarded to the best boats in many categories at 4pm.\n• Boat launching at 5pm\nHere are the rules\n➢ All boats must be biodegradable\n➢ no bigger than 80 cms.\n➢ You can build your boat at home or at the club. \nWe will launch all boats down the slipway after prize giving. Each boat will carry a tea\ncandle which needs to be lit before launch. You can bring your own tea candle or use our\ntea candles. \nWe will release the boat on the tide to see how far they will sail\, taking your hopes and\ndreams for the year ahead\, lets pray the boat does not – sink too soon\, crash\, get stuck in\nthe mud\, gets knocked over\, burn like a Viking pyre\, or candle gets blown out……\nIts great fun for all.
