SUMMARY:GYC Social – “GYC’s Got Talent”
DESCRIPTION:GYC Music Night — A Celebration of Our Hidden Talent.  GYC has an extraordinary amount of talent — from our creative artists (painters\, potters\, sculptors\, electronic artists and more) who shine at the Open House Art Show\, to our wonderful “actors” who bring the GYC Pantomime to life. \nBut rarely do we get the chance to showcase the incredible musicians and singers within our club. This event is dedicated entirely to them — a night for our musical members to step forward and share the talent we don’t often get to see. It may even be the beginning of a new annual tradition. I’d love to hear your thoughts on that. \nNicola Rae will be managing the evening for me\, and David Stern will be our presenter. \n🎤 Outline of the Night \n(Minor adjustments may follow after rehearsal) \n\n1900 — David Stern introduces the first act\n1903 — Brian Gascoigne on piano\n1905 — Peter Waugh solo\, singing two songs (with Brian on piano); the second is a singalong\n1915 — Natalia Soole solo\, singing (with Brian on piano)\n1925 — Brian Gascoigne solo piano performance\n1930 — Tony Norwell & Sons on piano and guitar\n2000 — David Stern closes the event with a few words\n\n⭐ Everyone Welcome \nThis will be a unique and memorable social night — a chance to celebrate the musical side of GYC and enjoy an evening of creativity\, community\, and talent.

Roger is running a workshop on a Tuesday night to learning “Whipping” and “Splicing” (we may not get to the chains!) every other month starting from 17th February. Bring your own fid!\nWhipping and splicing are traditional ways to repair and care for your rope. They’re especially useful\, as replacing rope new for old is wasteful and can be expensive. \nThe technique of whipping is hundreds of years old\, but it remains the best and safest way to secure the end of a rope. It’s generally regarded to be much better than melting the end\, which can create sharp or bulging ends \nRope splicing is the forming of a semi-permanent joint between two or two parts of the same rope by partly untwisting and then interweaving their strands. Splices can be used to form a stopper at the end of a line\, to form a loop or an eye in a rope\, or for joining two ropes together. Splices are preferred to knotted rope\, since while a knot typically reduces the strength by 20–40%\, a splice is capable of attaining a rope’s full strength. \nAny Questions talk to Roger\, see you all there!\n

SUMMARY:GYC Social - Beach Clean2
DESCRIPTION:Our last beach clean on 18th April was very successful with 22 bags of rubbish and 15 bags of recycling.  Let’s see if we can beat that record and keep our beach clean for our community / wildlife!   Therefore\, I have organised another beach clean with permission from PLA\, Environmental Agency\, Thames21 and Greenwich Council. \nThis is a free event for our members to give back to the community and help our wildlife thrive; but we do need you to book a slot so we know that we have enough litter pickers and know how many volunteers to expect \nImportant notes \n\nWear closed toe shoes/boots (with metal ideal\, but not mandatory).\nWear gloves (you will not be handling any litter).\nWear long comfortable trousers.\nWear long sleeved tops.\nAny cuts and open wounds must be dressed and covered before attending (mandatory)\nOptional – facemasks and goggles\n\nWe will provide bags\, litter pickers (limited) and guidance. \nI will be managing this event with the help of Dee Smith who is also the Area Coordinator for British Divers Marine Life Rescue and is a Marine Mammal Medic. \nAny questions please do get in touch – social@greenwichyachtclub.co.uk \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:This is a hugely popular event we will be running annually on a regular basis. \nWe will be providing BBQs setup on the beach and ready to use\, a bonfire\, lights\, DJ and Music. \nDancing is optional. \nAll you have to do is turn up with something to put on the BBQ to cook or burn (meat\, fish\, veg) and anything else you want to eat / drink. \nWe have 2 garden benches to use. DESCRIPTION:This event is for members & applying members only. \nChristine is running a workshop on a Tuesday night every other month\, to learning different types of “knots” and learn parts of the boat\, on the dates at the top of this poster.\nSailors learn many types of nautical knots because different tasks demand different combinations of security\, adjustability\, strength\, ease of tying/untying\, and suitability for\nrope type and conditions. A single knot cannot optimally meet every need on a vessel; matching knot to purpose reduces risk\, saves time\, and preserves gear.\nUnderstanding the names of the parts of the sailing boat is an essential part of your journey to sailing. If you’re a beginner sailor\, you want a quick and solid overview of the\ndifferent sailboat parts this workshop is for you. From early on in his sailing career Rodney Lord found himself learning not only from experience but also from giant figures of the past—men like the diarist Samuel Pepys\, or Robert Fitzroy\, the inventor of weather forecasting and saviour of countless lives.\nIn this compelling travel memoir\, we start to appreciate not only the journey but the arrival\, and begin to relish the encounters with these local heroes\, with their triumphs and tragedies.\nThe pleasure of travelling\, says the novelist Marcel Proust\, is to make the contrast between departure and arrival as profound as possible so that one can marvel\nat the link between two distinct personalities of place. SUMMARY:GYC Workshop – Whipping\, Splicing and Chains!
DESCRIPTION:This event is for members & applying members only. Roger is running a workshop on a Tuesday night to learning “Whipping” and “Splicing” (we may not get to the chains!) every other month starting from 17th February. Bring your own fid!\nWhipping and splicing are traditional ways to repair and care for your rope. They’re especially useful\, as replacing rope new for old is wasteful and can be expensive. \nThe technique of whipping is hundreds of years old\, but it remains the best and safest way to secure the end of a rope. It’s generally regarded to be much better than melting the end\, which can create sharp or bulging ends \nRope splicing is the forming of a semi-permanent joint between two or two parts of the same rope by partly untwisting and then interweaving their strands. Splices can be used to form a stopper at the end of a line\, to form a loop or an eye in a rope\, or for joining two ropes together. Splices are preferred to knotted rope\, since while a knot typically reduces the strength by 20–40%\, a splice is capable of attaining a rope’s full strength. \nAny Questions talk to Roger\, see you all there!\n
