SUMMARY:Rowing: Rowing the slacks at Margaret Ness
DESCRIPTION:Are normal trips too easy for you?  Do you still have a few ounces of energy left at the end of a row?  Do you feel that it’s all about the journey\, not the destination?  Do you want to hone your skill as a rower\, not just make it to lunch break and back?  Then come join us for some dedicated rowing training\, against the tide\, where we can perfect technique and show the Thames that it doesn’t always decide which way we go. \nSafety Briefing: 10:50\nRopes Off: 11:20\nFinish: 13:30 \nHigh Water: 10:41\nSunset: 19:27

SUMMARY:Dinghy 2026 Spring Series 3 - The Baker Challenge Trophy (relay)
DESCRIPTION:Day: Sunday\nBriefing: 09:15\nStart:10:45\nTides: HW | 11:41\nCourse: Club House \nThe Baker Challenge Trophy \nInaugurated in 2007\, the Baker Challenge Trophy commemorates ex-Commodore Richard Baker and his father Graham. It’s one of the most entertaining events on the GYC calendar — a chaotic\, fun relay race where teamwork (and a good sense of humour) matter just as much as sailing skill. \nHow it works \nTeams of three sailors share one dinghy\, taking turns on the water across three short races. \nEach race is sailed over two laps. Two sailors launch with a mascot aboard. They race to the mark\, tie the mascot to it\, then sail to the pontoon to swap in a fresh crew member before completing the lap. On the second lap\, the crew swing back past the mark to retrieve the mascot\, make one final sailor exchange at the pontoon\, and cross the finish line — hopefully with mascot\, crew\, and dignity intact. \nThree races are sailed in total\, so everyone gets their moment of glory (and their share of the scrambling). The team with the best combined results across all three races lifts the trophy.

SUMMARY:GYC Visit - RNLI's Tower Lifeboat Station
DESCRIPTION:Greenwich Yacht Club is one of a small number of organisations invited to visit Tower Lifeboat Station on the 28th March. This is a dress rehearsal before the station is opened to\nthe general public later this year. \nWho can attend?\nAlthough other fundraising for the RNLI takes place at GYC\, this invitation is specifically in recognition of GYC’s annual fundraising yacht race for the benefit of the Tower Lifeboat Station. There are 20 places available. Competitors in the 2025 race\, and volunteers who helped the event run smoothly\, are invited to sign up to secure their place by Saturday March 7.  After this date\, remaining places will be made available to all GYC members. \nWhere is Tower Lifeboat Station?\nConfusingly nowhere near the Tower of London\, for which it was named! It is on the north embankment of the Thames to the east of Waterloo Bridge.  The address is Tower Lifeboat Station\, Victoria Embankment\, Westminster\, London WC2R 2PP.   The nearest tube stations are Embankment and Temple. \nWhat’s the Itinerary?\nThe visit will include an illustrated talk about the RNLI in general and Tower Lifeboat Station in particular\, followed by a tour of the station conducted by crew/former crew members\, concluding with “Q and A” session. The presentation includes recordings of real life incidents\, and viewer discretion is advised.  There is no charge for this visit\, however donations to the RNLI would be much appreciated. \nWhere does visit start?\nAttendees are requested to meet at the top of the downstream/most easterly access ramp to Tower Lifeboat Station at 2pm on Saturday 28 th March. Please do not be late\, and plan to arrive earlier than 2pm. The visit will last up to 90 minutes\, though may finish sooner. \nWhat else you need to know?\nUnfortunately\, there is no disabled access to the station and the visit is not suitable for anyone with impaired mobility. Visitors are required to wear flat shoes. \nAny Questions\nContact Clive or Jim Four

SUMMARY:GYC TALK - "Harbours and Heroes" by Rodney Lord (ex-GYC Member)
DESCRIPTION:GYC Social Team are delighted to welcome back our former GYC member Mr Rodney Lord to talk about his incredible book “Harbours and Heroes” \nSynopsis of book:\nHarbours and Heroes is the story of a love affair with sailing which gradually developed into a vivid exploration of the history of Europe through its coastlines. From early on in his sailing career Rodney Lord found himself learning not only from experience but also from giant figures of the past—men like the diarist Samuel Pepys\, or Robert Fitzroy\, the inventor of weather forecasting and saviour of countless lives.\nIn this compelling travel memoir\, we start to appreciate not only the journey but the arrival\, and begin to relish the encounters with these local heroes\, with their triumphs and tragedies.\nThe pleasure of travelling\, says the novelist Marcel Proust\, is to make the contrast between departure and arrival as profound as possible so that one can marvel\nat the link between two distinct personalities of place. There’s nothing more intense than travelling across the sea in a small boat\, entirely dependent on your own skill and experience to ensure you arrive surely and safely\, to savour the difference between where you embarked and where you step ashore. \nAbout the Author\nRodney has worked in Fleet Street as Economics Editor and leader writer for The Times. He has also written a book on value for money in education and spent three years in HM Treasury as a special adviser to Nigel Lawson. Later he set up his own publishing company focusing on contemporary economic challenges. \nThere will be copies of this book for members to purchase a signed copy\, so please do bring cash (£11.85 on Amazon)

SUMMARY:GYC Workshop – Whipping\, Splicing and Chains!
DESCRIPTION:This event is for members & applying members only. Roger is running a workshop on a Tuesday night to learning “Whipping” and “Splicing” (we may not get to the chains!) every other month starting from 17th February. Bring your own fid!\nWhipping and splicing are traditional ways to repair and care for your rope. They’re especially useful\, as replacing rope new for old is wasteful and can be expensive. \nThe technique of whipping is hundreds of years old\, but it remains the best and safest way to secure the end of a rope. It’s generally regarded to be much better than melting the end\, which can create sharp or bulging ends \nRope splicing is the forming of a semi-permanent joint between two or two parts of the same rope by partly untwisting and then interweaving their strands. Splices can be used to form a stopper at the end of a line\, to form a loop or an eye in a rope\, or for joining two ropes together. Splices are preferred to knotted rope\, since while a knot typically reduces the strength by 20–40%\, a splice is capable of attaining a rope’s full strength. \nAny Questions talk to Roger\, see you all there!\n
