SUMMARY:Rowing: Three Mills
DESCRIPTION:A nice gentle row up Bow Creek to Three Mills studios\, home to MasterChef\, Big Brother and RuPaul’s Drag Race\, and where Lock\, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels\, Isle of Dogs\, and 28 Days Later were filmed.  We can’t promise you’ll see Kanye West or Paloma Faith rehearsing there this time\, but there is a convenient Tescos to buy a sandwich\, so that’s something. \nSafety Briefing: 14:30\nRopes Off: 15:00\nFinish: 17:30 \nHigh Water: 14:59\nSunset: 19:37

SUMMARY:Cox training (Sail Loft)
DESCRIPTION:Come find out how you earn your promotion to the best seat in the boat\, from where you can command your minions to row you to anywhere on the Thames!  As long as they’re happy to\, that is.  And the tide’s going the right way. And isn’t so far out we can’t launch.  And the PLA approves.  But other than that\, anywhere. \nTaking a bus might be easier\, to be honest. \nTraining starts: 18:30\nVenue: Sail Loft at GYC \n

SUMMARY:GYC Workshop – Knots and Boat Parts!
DESCRIPTION:This event is for members & applying members only. \nChristine is running a workshop on a Tuesday night every other month\, to learning different types of “knots” and learn parts of the boat\, on the dates at the top of this poster.\nSailors learn many types of nautical knots because different tasks demand different combinations of security\, adjustability\, strength\, ease of tying/untying\, and suitability for\nrope type and conditions. A single knot cannot optimally meet every need on a vessel; matching knot to purpose reduces risk\, saves time\, and preserves gear.\nUnderstanding the names of the parts of the sailing boat is an essential part of your journey to sailing. If you’re a beginner sailor\, you want a quick and solid overview of the\ndifferent sailboat parts this workshop is for you. If you are just curious about any part of this workshop – why don’t you join us. \nAny Questions talk to Christine\n

SUMMARY:GYC Workshop – Whipping\, Splicing and Chains!
DESCRIPTION:This event is for members & applying members only. Roger is running a workshop on a Tuesday night to learning “Whipping” and “Splicing” (we may not get to the chains!) every other month starting from 17th February. Bring your own fid!\nWhipping and splicing are traditional ways to repair and care for your rope. They’re especially useful\, as replacing rope new for old is wasteful and can be expensive. \nThe technique of whipping is hundreds of years old\, but it remains the best and safest way to secure the end of a rope. It’s generally regarded to be much better than melting the end\, which can create sharp or bulging ends \nRope splicing is the forming of a semi-permanent joint between two or two parts of the same rope by partly untwisting and then interweaving their strands. Splices can be used to form a stopper at the end of a line\, to form a loop or an eye in a rope\, or for joining two ropes together. Splices are preferred to knotted rope\, since while a knot typically reduces the strength by 20–40%\, a splice is capable of attaining a rope’s full strength. \nAny Questions talk to Roger\, see you all there!\n

SUMMARY:GYC’s 2026 RNLI Fundraising Yacht Race
DESCRIPTION:Greenwich Yacht Club is hosting its third annual fundraising yacht race for the RNLI lifeboats charity on Sunday May 10. \nWho can enter?\nEntry is open to members of GYC and other sailing clubs based on the River Thames and River Medway.  Free overnight moorings are available for visiting competitors on the day before the race and on race day itself. The Clubhouse Bar will be open in the evening before the race\, Saturday May 9\, with a social event being planned. \nHow many can enter?\nWe can accept up to 20 race entries\, and the entry fee is a non-refundable £15. All money raised will be donated to the RNLI’s Tower Lifeboat Station\, based at Waterloo. This station covers GYC’s home stretch of the River Thames\, and it is the busiest RNLI station in the country. \nWhat type of race is it?\nIt is a “Start when you like” race. After a briefing at 09.30\, skippers can decide their own departure time to set off downriver from GYC to Erith Reach\, and then ideally round the furthest mark in time to catch the incoming tide back to Greenwich. \nRace positions will be decided based on elapsed time (there and back) using the Byron Handicap system. There will be prizes for the best GYC finisher\, and the best finisher among guest entries. \nFundraising challenge\nA raffle on race day has previously raised most of the money\, which in 2025 totalled £2\,266. This is equivalent to the cost of equipping an inshore lifeboat crew member with a drysuit\, a thermal suit\, a lifejacket\, and two helmets and pairs of gloves. Let’s see if we can beat that in 2026! \nWho else is coming?\nThis is a popular event in GYC’s Racing Calendar\, and is well supported by members who are not on the water as either competitors or support crew in trot boats. This makes it a lively atmosphere in the Clubhouse\, and we have also invited representatives of the PLA and RYA\, and an RNLI lifeboat crew\, plus local councillors and the Mayor\, to attend the post-race trophy presentation. This will take place around 4 o’clock\, subject to the weather’s influence on the race conditions. \nAfter the trophies are awarded there will be the raffle\, with prizes generously donated by a number of sailing brands and local businesses. \nDress to impress\nBranded souvenir merchandise is available to buy online before the event\, with polo shirts for £20 and caps for £10. Both prices include a donation to the RNLI. Personalization with a Boat Name\, or your own name\, plus delivery\, are extra. \nHere’s a tip: get together with other people to choose your items\, as orders with a total value over £99.99 will qualify for free delivery. Access to the merchandise will open soon.
